What is Modern Tenkara?
For hundreds of years' tenkara was a culturally unique fishing method that was practiced exclusively by Japanese anglers. Yamamoto Soseki, the described Father of Modern Tenkara, wrote his book, Tenkara Secrets almost 40 years ago. Yuzo Sebata, the recently passed modern practitioner of Genryu-fishing traveled to the U.S. to share tenkara with the West over 30 years ago. It is now approaching 20 years since Tenkara USA introduced tenkara rods to the retail market in the United States, and over the last decade we've been fortunate to have Japanese Master's travel to the U.S. and demonstrate their skills and showcase tenkara techniques.
However, as those Master anglers make fewer trips around the world to teach and share tenkara, it is NOW US who must carry the banner of educator to the American angler. Master Tenkara's 4-Hour Masterclass and Fixed-Line Casting School embrace the idea of innovation through education. Understanding the rich history of tenkara now includes a new generation of Western anglers ready to share the traditions of tenkara's past, as well, contribute NEW ideas to the world-wide ethos that is Modern Tenkara.
